The Trinity College community is mourning the tragic loss of Nicky Green ’29, a 29-year-old student whose death has deeply shaken the campus and left friends, classmates, faculty, and loved ones grieving. Green was found deceased in his dorm room in Jones Hall on Thursday, Jan. 22, a loss confirmed in an email sent to the Trinity community by College President Dan Lugo at 9:34 p.m. that evening.
Earlier that night, at approximately 8:14 p.m., The Tripod observed law enforcement removing a body on a stretcher from the first floor of Jones Hall, a first-year residence located on the south side of Trinity’s campus. The area surrounding Jones Hall saw an increased presence of campus safety officers throughout the day, prior to the arrival of Hartford Police sometime before 6:30 p.m. A friend of Green’s shared that he had not heard from him since Tuesday night, adding to the concern felt by those close to him.
According to accounts from friends, Nicky Green was known as a dependable, hardworking, and kind individual. One friend described him as “always a good, honest person who I could rely on to be there,” noting his strong work ethic and dedication to his studies. Green had reportedly shared at the end of the previous semester that he had not missed a single class, a reflection of his commitment and determination. Friends also remembered his sense of humor, describing him as quick to joke and easy to spend time with.
Beyond academics, Green had a fondness for music. Those who knew him shared that he particularly enjoyed the band Cake, a small but meaningful detail that speaks to his personality and the interests that brought him joy. These memories, shared in the wake of his passing, paint a picture of a thoughtful and engaged student whose presence will be deeply missed.
Green’s death marks the first passing of a currently enrolled Trinity College student since Ryan Chisholm ’25, who died on Nov. 1, 2022, following what the college described as a tragic accident. The loss has prompted an outpouring of grief and reflection across campus, as students and staff grapple with the emotional weight of losing a member of their community.
In his message to the campus, President Lugo emphasized the availability of support resources for those affected by Green’s death. Counseling and Wellness Center staff were identified as key resources, with staff members made available Thursday night in the ground-floor common space of Jones Hall. On Friday, additional drop-in counseling sessions were offered, along with designated “space held for support” in the Chapel beginning at 12 p.m., providing opportunities for quiet reflection, community support, and care.
The Tripod reported that Green’s family could not be immediately reached for comment. The Trinity College community has been asked to respect the family’s privacy as they navigate this profound and devastating loss.
The passing of Nicky Green is a heartbreaking reminder of the challenges individuals may face and the importance of compassion, connection, and mental health awareness. As Trinity College continues to grieve, the community is coming together to honor Green’s memory, support one another, and ensure that those who are struggling know they are not alone.
Nicky Green ’29 will be remembered for his dedication, his kindness, his humor, and the quiet impact he had on those around him. His life mattered, and his memory will remain in the hearts of those who knew and cared for him.
